UCC are delighted to announce a free three-day Creative Concepts design workshop created by Alyssa Hinton, George Boole's great-great-granddaughter in The River Room, Glucksman Gallery (24th to 26th May, 2017).

 

The Creative Concepts workshop is designed to help students and staff of varied levels and disciplines expand their perceptive ability and intuitive intelligence. Drawing and collage will serve as the basis for exploring and conveying provocative themes and concepts.  Unusual, yet cohesive solutions to visual problems are found by tricking the rational mind into “losing its grip”.  Participation involves a whole-brained experience of exploring and integrating information, where analogies are drawn and "the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts”. 

 

The three-day workshop is divided into morning and afternoon sessions. We will start with a more personal exercise in self-reflection/expression using collage, a mixing-and-matching activity as creativity warm up. Then lead into projects using skills and concepts that subtly build upon one another. The culminating project, Seeing and Drawing Sounds, offers more leeway, allowing for the free adaptation of the skills and concepts covered.

• Project #2 Drawing Exercise - Experiencing the Shift to the Right Side of the Brain
• Upside Down Contour Drawing of Irish Poet Samuel Beckett.

Afternoon

• Project #3 - Designing Tessellations, The Intersection of Math and Art 
• Square Template Method

 Day 3:

Morning

• Project #4 - Design Systems and Structures
• Choose between the following 3:

1. Undifferentiated Substructures - Imaginative Map Projection
2. Design From Nature - Axial Synthesis Drawing
3. Design From Nature - Explosion Pattern 

Afternoon

• Project #5 - Seeing and Drawing Sounds (sounds of the humpback whale and jazz greats: Don Cherry; Dewey Redden; Charlie Haden; Ed Blackwell and Kenny Garrett)

Alyssa Hinton, great-great-granddaughter of George Boole, is an internationally recognised mixed media artist and art educator from the United States. She earned her B.F.A. from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and her M.A. in Art & Design from North Carolina State University. She has studied internationally at the University of Grenoble, France, Parsons Paris, Beijing University, and China Central Academy of Fine Arts.  

Alyssa is an art professor and licensed art educator. In 2002 she developed a free-lance curriculum entitled Art for Life that specialised in contextual learning solutions for troubled youth. She later adapted this programme for various art residencies, including an IBM Enterprise Learning workshop applied to business planning and leadership styles. Most recently Alyssa has conducted college level workshops at the University of Colorado at Fort Collins, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke and at Roxboro Community College, NC. In 2015, having studied art in China over 30 years ago, she was invited as artist-in-residence to The China Academy of Art in Hang Zhou, China.
