Séamus Davis introduces the most exciting and fundamental challenges at the frontiers for physics today.
As part of the George Boole 200 celebrations and the Life Long Learning Festival, University College Cork is delighted to welcome Professor Séamus Davis, the JG White Distinguished Professor of Physical Sciences at Cornell University, New York, to present a lecture and discussion on the ‘New Frontiers of Physics’ and todays approaches of investigation.
Science graduate and Skibbereen native, PROFESSOR SÉAMUS DAVIS is an internationally renowned physicist. He earned a B.Sc. in physics from University College Cork in 1983 and his Ph.D. from the University of California – Berkeley, USA in 1989. Davis was appointed Professor of Physics at the University of California - Berkeley and a Faculty Physicist at Berkeley National Laboratory between 1993 and 2003. He then became Professor of Physics at Cornell University, New York, in 2003 and a Senior Physicist at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York in 2006. In 2007 he was appointed SUPA Distinguished Research Professor of Physics at St. Andrews University, Scotland, and in 2008 the J.G. White Distinguished Professor of Physical Sciences at Cornell University. He also serves as Director of the Center for Emergent Superconductivity, an Energy Frontier Research Center of the US Dept. of Energy.
Séamus Davis’ active research is focused upon macroscopic quantum physics of emergent quantum matter including studies of superconductors, superfluids, supersolids, spin and monopole liquids, and even of space-time itself. He has won numerous awards for his work, including the Outstanding Performance Award of the Berkeley National Lab. (2001), the Science and Technology Award of Brookhaven National Lab. (2013), the Fritz London Memorial Prize (2005), and the H. Kammerlingh-Onnes Memorial Prize (2009). Davis is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (UK), the American Physical Society (USA), and a Member of the US National Academy of Sciences.
The New Frontiers of Physics lecture takes place in UCC Western Gateway Building lecture theatre G05 at 6pm and all are welcome. The event is free but preregistration is required. To register please email the George Boole 200 team at georgeboole200@ucc.ie
